There is only one ultimate goal in animal shelters : to find a forever home for as many pets as possible. So they can live happily ever after.
That explains the several layers in the adoption process. And one we particularly focus on, as veterinarians, has to do with what we call « preventive health ». This refers to the key health messages people need to hear when they adopt out a pet. The real challenge in 2016 ? In our opinion, it’s essentially identifying them. Because when we give it some thoughts, there could potentially be a long list of things we would like to tell them... And the adopter could definitely quickly feel overwhelmed.
This is where living in an interconnected and computerized world like ours somehow changes the game. Huge veterinary databases exist today, allowing us to better identify which medical problems are more of a concern. They help us better tailor the advice that need to be given to the new adopters. Definitely something you guys can benefit from in animal shelters.
We took a look at the different database now available and will share their key findings with you guys during our next shelter webinar series. Be sure to grab a virtual spot right now : great online discussion ahead !
